If we talk about when it starts then we will see this significant growth started after the launch of android which starts growing day by day better and better any in ony 5 years became the world number 1 mobile platform with endless customization , features and huge app collection.

Yes it was HTC Dream which was the first commercially available android powered phone.

the phone was released in October 2008. 

The game changing feature of the phone was it's customization as compared to it's main rival (Symbian,Blackberry & IOS) also the phone features inegration of Google services (G-mail,Maps etc.)

The First android features Qualcomm MSM7201A chipset with CPU was single core clocked @528 Mhz

supported with only 192 MB of ram and 256 mb of rom with HVGA resolution (320x480) screen of size 3.2 inches.
